Why Singapore visas get refused, and what the bank statement needs to show

Singapore's immigration authority never explains a refusal. After processing files under our own Authorised Visa Agent appointment, we have a fair idea of what sits behind most of them.

A Singapore tourist visa for an Indian passport goes through an Authorised Visa Agent appointed by the Consulate-General in Chennai, or through a Singapore citizen or permanent resident acting as your local contact. The agent checks the file and uploads it to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority's system; ICA decides, usually within three to five working days. When it refuses, it says only that the application was unsuccessful. This article is the list we work through with a refused applicant at our Hyderabad desk.

First, the refusals that are really typos

  • Name or date of birth not matching the passport. The form must follow the machine-readable zone exactly: same spelling, same order of surname and given names, no added middle name that is not in the passport.
  • Signature mismatch. Form 14A is signed; a signature that does not resemble the passport signature is a flag.
  • A missing Singapore postal code. The address of your hotel or local contact needs the six-digit code; the field is not optional.
  • An incomplete local-contact section. If you have no contact, the hotel is the contact and its details must be complete.

The photo

Taken within the last three months, plain white matt background, full face, neutral expression, 35 by 45 millimetres in print or 400 by 514 pixels as a JPEG. Phone selfies, cropped group photos and scans of older passport photos are the most common photo refusals, and the easiest to avoid.

The bank statement, which is where most files are won or lost

ICA publishes no minimum balance. What it wants to see is that the trip is affordable for the person described in the rest of the file, and that the money is genuinely theirs. In practice the desk looks for the following before it will upload a file:

  • Three to six months of statements, not a balance certificate alone. A single page showing one closing balance tells ICA nothing about the account's life.
  • Consistency with the salary slips or business income. A salary that is credited every month and spending that matches the person's declared profession is the normal pattern. Statements that show no salary credits for a salaried applicant raise a question.
  • No unexplained lump sums. A large credit a week before the application is the classic weak point. If a relative transferred money or a fixed deposit matured, a one-line explanation and the matching document turn a weakness into a non-issue.
  • Comfortable funds for the stay. Enough to cover hotels, food and return travel for the number of days applied for, with a margin. Ask the desk for the figure that fits your trip; it depends on the length and the hotels in the file.

Profile and history

  • No employment or leave letter. A letter on company letterhead confirming the job, the salary and the approved leave dates is the standard proof of ties to India. Self-employed applicants use business registration and recent tax filings.
  • Thin travel history combined with a young, single, unemployed profile. Any one of these alone is fine; together they describe the applicant ICA worries will not return. A sponsor letter, proof of study or a family booking changes the picture.
  • A previous overstay or violation in Singapore. This is the one history that reliably refuses, and no reapplication strategy fixes it quickly.
  • False declarations. A previous refusal that is not disclosed, or an answer that contradicts the passport, is treated as deception.

Validity is not stay

A common misunderstanding after approval: a thirty-day visa does not mean thirty days in Singapore. The visa is permission to enter during its validity window. The immigration officer at the checkpoint grants the actual stay on your electronic visit pass, usually up to thirty days, at their discretion. Enter before the visa expires, and count your stay from the pass, not the visa.

Children and families

Every child needs their own Form 14A, signed by a parent, with copies of both parents' passports. A birth certificate goes in every child's file, and a consent letter from the non-travelling parent when a child travels with one parent or with relatives. Families are usually lodged together so the files are read together.

After a refusal: appeal or reapply?

  • You can appeal within one month through the same agent; ICA takes about fourteen working days. An appeal that changes nothing in the file is a second refusal. Appeal only when you can add a document that answers the probable weakness.
  • There is no bar on reapplying. Fix the file first: a fuller statement, the missing letter, a compliant photo, an explanation for the lump sum.
  • The visa fee is not refunded on refusal, so the file should be right before it goes in. That is the point of the agent's check.

Note. Westin Travel processes Singapore visas under its own Authorised Visa Agent appointment from the Consulate-General in Chennai, for residents of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. We check every file against this list before it is uploaded, and we tell you honestly when a file is not ready. Details, documents and timelines are on the Singapore visa page.

Questions we hear at the desk

Why was my Singapore visa refused?

ICA does not disclose reasons. In our experience most refusals trace to one of four things: details that do not match the passport, a non-compliant photo, a bank statement that is too short or shows unexplained lump sums, or a profile with weak ties to India and no travel history. Review the file against those with your agent before appealing or reapplying.

How much bank balance is needed for a Singapore visa?

ICA publishes no minimum. The desk looks for three to six months of statements that are consistent with your salary or business income, no large unexplained credits just before applying, and comfortable funds for the length of stay in the file. The right figure depends on your trip, so ask the desk for guidance for your dates and hotels.

Can I reapply straight after a Singapore visa refusal?

Yes. There is no waiting period, and you may instead appeal within one month through the same agent, which takes about fourteen working days. Either way, change something first: add the missing letter, a fuller statement or a compliant photo. The fee is not refunded, so a repeat of the same file is a repeat of the same result.

Is a thirty-day Singapore visa a thirty-day stay?

No. The visa's validity is the window in which you may enter Singapore. The length of stay is granted by the immigration officer on your visit pass at arrival, usually up to thirty days. Enter before the visa expires and count your stay from the pass.

Do children need their own Singapore visa application?

Yes. Each child has a separate Form 14A signed by a parent, with copies of both parents' passports and the birth certificate. A consent letter from the non-travelling parent is needed when a child travels with one parent or with relatives. Family files are lodged together.
