Japan is one of the few consulates that still reads a fully paper file — no fingerprints, no routine interview, just the documents in front of the officer. Which is exactly why the file has to hold up: a day-wise itinerary without hotel contacts, an ITR that doesn't sit well with the bank statement, a photo older than six months — any one of these can slow a straightforward application.

MANDATORY · ALL APPLICANTS
- Valid passport with more than two blank pages (submit old passports too, if any)
- Photocopy of the passport bio-data page — first and last page, on A4 size paper
- Completely filled and signed Japan visa application form
- One photograph taken within the last 6 months — passport size, white background, printed on good-quality photo paper
- Flight or cruise schedule to and from Japan — a reservation, not necessarily a paid ticket
- Day-wise itinerary in Japan, including hotel information and contact details while in Japan
- Covering letter, if any special explanation is needed
- Latest Income Tax Return — or last 6 months' bank statement if the ITR is unavailable
- For students and dependents: consent letter from parents or spouse, plus their ITR or 6-month bank statement
- Proof of relationship — passport copy, marriage certificate or birth certificate — if travelling with dependents
Submitted documents are not returned — only the passport comes back after processing. Keep copies of everything you hand in.

Japan asks business owners for the same core proof as everyone else:

- Anything beyond these — business registration, company statements — is confirmed at the desk
Retired

How much balance is enough?
No official minimum balance is published for Japan. The consulate looks for a healthy, consistent balance that shows you can comfortably fund the trip — if you're unsure your statement reads that way, we'll confirm it at the desk before anything is submitted.

VFS forwards the file to the Consulate-General of Japan, Chennai — a minimum of 3 working days, realistically 5–10. We track it until your passport is back, then check the sticker's validity dates and permitted stay with you before you book anything non-refundable.

Where do I submit a Japan visa application in Hyderabad, and do I need an appointment?

Applying 3–4 weeks before travel is the safe window; you cannot apply more than 89 days before your travel date.
Can I get a Japan eVisa from Hyderabad instead of visiting the VFS centre?
Yes — the JAPAN eVISA covers residents of India for single-entry tourism with a stay of up to 90 days. Indian residents cannot apply directly on Japan's MOFA website; the application must be lodged through a travel agency registered for that purpose with the Japanese Embassy or Consulate. You receive an electronic Visa Issuance Notice instead of a passport sticker, so no VFS visit is needed. Is Japan visa-free or visa-on-arrival for Indian passport holders?
No — this is a common misconception. Indian nationals must obtain a visa before travelling to Japan; there is no visa-on-arrival or visa-free entry for ordinary Indian passports. Only the paper sticker visa via VFS or the eVisa lodged through a travel agency registered with the Japanese Embassy or Consulate are valid routes.
Do I need an interview or biometrics for a Japan visa, and must I go to Chennai?
No fingerprints or biometrics are taken for a Japan visa, and there is no routine interview. Hyderabad applicants submit documents at the VFS Japan Visa Application Centre in Ameerpet — the file goes to the Chennai consulate, but you do not travel there. The consulate can ask for an interview or extra documents in exceptional cases.
