Every few weeks a client asks our desk the same question: when can I get a US visa interview in Hyderabad? The answer changes monthly, so we keep this page current from the State Department's published wait-time table and from what our applicants actually experience. Figures below are from the table dated 17 September 2026, the latest available when we checked on 13 October 2026. Always confirm the live number on the State Department's wait-times page before you plan around it.
The number right now
| Post | Next B1/B2 interview | Average wait |
|---|---|---|
| Hyderabad | About 12 months | About 11.5 months |
| Mumbai | About 11.5 months | About 11.5 months |
| New Delhi | About 10 months | About 10 months |
| Chennai | About 7.5 months | About 7.5 months |
| Kolkata | About 6.5 months | About 6.5 months |
Hyderabad is currently the longest wait of India's five posts. Student visas are a separate queue and run far shorter, typically six to ten weeks.
How it moved over the last eighteen months
- April 2025: about seven and a half months.
- October to November 2025: about three to three and a half months, when Hyderabad was briefly the shortest wait in the country.
- March 2026: six and a half to eight months.
- August 2026: nine and a half months.
- September 2026: twelve months.
The main driver was a rule change, not a surge of travellers. From September 2025 the interview-waiver programme, which Hyderabad applicants know as dropbox, was narrowed sharply. Renewals that used to go through the drop-off counter went back into the interview queue, and the queue grew.
Who still qualifies for dropbox
As the rules stand, the interview waiver covers only renewals of a B1/B2 visa (plus diplomatic and official classes), and only when all of the following are true:
- The previous visa is in the same classification, still valid or expired within the last 12 months. Until February 2025 the window was 48 months.
- The previous visa was issued when the applicant was 18 or older. Confirm at the desk, as this condition has been reported but is applied case by case.
- There has been no refusal since that visa was issued.
- The applicant is a citizen or resident of India and applies in India.
The age exemptions are gone. Children under 14 and applicants over 80 used to skip the interview; since August 2026 the Embassy has confirmed that every minor, including infants, attends in person. A consular officer can also call any dropbox applicant for an interview.
You must apply where you live
From 6 September 2025 all non-immigrant visa applicants interview in their country of nationality or legal residence. The old route of a quicker appointment in Dubai or Bangkok is closed; applicants booked at a third-country post are refused and the fee is not refunded. Within India you may book at any of the five posts, which is the one lever that still works.
Where the two appointments happen in Hyderabad
- Biometrics and document drop-off: the Visa Application Centre at the lower concourse of HITEC City metro station, Madhapur. Confirm the current address on your ustraveldocs confirmation.
- Interview: the US Consulate General in the Financial District, Nanakramguda, which has handled interviews only since March 2023.
- The two appointments are usually booked on consecutive days, biometrics first.
The process, in order
- Complete the DS-160 online and keep the confirmation number.
- Create a ustraveldocs profile and pay the application fee. Fees are non-refundable and tied to the post you book.
- Book the biometrics appointment and then the consulate interview.
- Attend both. Our desk reviews the DS-160 against your documents and runs a mock interview beforehand.
- Track the case on CEAC. Once it shows Issued, the passport is usually back in three to seven working days, occasionally ten.
- Collect in person at the HITEC City centre or choose paid courier delivery before the interview. Since August 2025 a third party cannot collect for you, except a parent for a minor with a letter signed by both parents.
One free reschedule is allowed. A second reschedule, or a missed appointment, forfeits the fee.
How to get an earlier date, honestly
- Book the earliest slot you can, then watch for cancellations. Released dates appear at odd hours, often early morning. Check the portal yourself; do not share your login with anyone.
- Consider Chennai or Kolkata. Any Indian resident may book at any post. In September 2026 that meant a four-to-five-month saving for the cost of a flight.
- Expedited requests are granted only for medical emergencies, funerals, urgent business or a study start date, two per applicant. Weddings and holidays do not qualify, and a false emergency is noted on the file.
- Kolkata announced priority slots in May 2026 for parents aged 50 and above visiting children lawfully resident in the United States. Availability varies; confirm at the desk.
- A paid fast-track interview pilot runs at selected posts from July to December 2026. No Indian post was included when we checked.
What not to do
- Do not use bots, scripts or slot-selling agents. The Mission cancelled around 2,000 bot-made appointments in March 2025, suspends the accounts involved and caps daily portal logins.
- Do not book dropbox on a visa that lapsed more than 12 months ago or was in a different category. The system cancels the appointment and the fee is lost.
- Do not assume a child or elderly parent can skip the interview.
- Do not send a relative to collect the passport.
Our US visa desk prepares the DS-160, checks the dropbox eligibility properly before any fee is paid, books both appointments and prepares you for the interview. The queue is long; the file does not have to be.
Questions we hear at the desk
How long is the US visa interview wait in Hyderabad right now?
About 12 months for the next B1/B2 visitor-visa slot according to the State Department table dated 17 September 2026, the longest of India's five posts. The figure moves monthly, so check the live wait-times page before planning. Student visas run on a separate, much shorter queue.
Can I book my US visa interview at Chennai or Kolkata instead of Hyderabad?
Yes. Any resident of India may book at any of the five Indian posts. In September 2026 Kolkata was at about 6.5 months and Chennai at about 7.5, so switching can save four to five months in exchange for the travel. Third-country posts such as Dubai are closed to Indian residents since September 2025.
Am I still eligible for dropbox in 2026?
Only if you are renewing a B1/B2 visa that is still valid or expired within the last 12 months, issued when you were 18 or older, with no refusal since, and you apply in India. The under-14 and over-80 exemptions have been removed, so children and elderly parents now interview in person.
How do I find an earlier US visa appointment?
Book the earliest slot available, then check the portal yourself for released dates, often early in the morning. Consider another Indian post. Expedited appointments cover medical, funeral, urgent business and study start dates only, two per applicant. Never use bots or slot sellers; the Mission cancels those bookings.
When do I get my passport back after the interview?
Usually three to seven working days after CEAC shows Issued, occasionally up to ten. Collect it in person at the HITEC City Visa Application Centre or choose paid courier delivery before the interview; a relative cannot collect it for you.
