AT A GLANCE

The trip, on one ledger.

The west and south coasts and the hill country are driest from December to March; the south-west monsoon brings rain from May to September. The east coast around Trincomalee and Arugam Bay is best from April to September, so the island has a dry coast in every month. Kandy and Nuwara Eliya are pleasant most of the year.

WHAT THE DESK ARRANGES

Flights, stays, transfers and paperwork — one booking.

Sri Lanka is the closest beach-and-hills holiday to Hyderabad: Kandy's Temple of the Tooth, the scenic train through tea country to Nuwara Eliya and Ella, leopard safaris at Yala and the fort town of Galle, all within a week. Food, faith and language feel familiar to Indian travellers, yet the island has its own rhythm, from hoppers at breakfast to stilt fishermen at dusk.

The Westin Travel desk arranges the nonstop flights, a car and driver for the whole circuit, hotels from tea-estate bungalows to beach resorts, reserved seats on the hill train, the Yala jeep safari and insurance, and files the free electronic travel authorisation for every traveller before you fly.

SAMPLE ITINERARY

5–6 nights, day by day.

A starting point, not a fixed route — every departure is reshaped around your dates, pace and travellers before anything is booked.

  1. DAY 1

Hyderabad to Colombo, on to Kandy

Morning nonstop to Colombo and straight into the car for the three-hour drive to Kandy, stopping at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage at bathing time. Evening puja at the Temple of the Tooth, with drummers and lamplight around the relic chamber, then dinner overlooking Kandy Lake.

  2. DAY 2

Kandy to Nuwara Eliya by train

Morning at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya, then board the hill train at Peradeniya Junction for the climb through tea estates to Nanu Oya. Reserved seats on the left for the views. Visit a tea factory on the way into Nuwara Eliya, the colonial 'Little England' at 1,900 metres.

  3. DAY 3

    Nuwara Eliya to Ella

A walk around Gregory Lake and Victoria Park, then the drive or train on to Ella. Afternoon at the Nine Arch Bridge, timed for a train crossing, and the short climb up Little Adam's Peak for sunset over the Ella Gap.

  4. DAY 4

    Ella to Yala

Drive about two and a half hours down through Ravana Falls and the dry-zone scrub to Tissamaharama. Afternoon jeep safari in Yala National Park, which has one of the highest leopard densities anywhere, plus elephants, sloth bears and crocodiles at the lagoons.

  5. DAY 5

    Yala to Bentota via Galle

Along the south coast past Mirissa and Weligama, where stilt fishermen still work the shallows, to Galle. Walk the Dutch fort's ramparts, lunch inside the walls, then on to Bentota for a beach evening.

  6. DAY 6

    Bentota to Colombo and home

Morning boat on the Madu River through mangrove islands and a stop at the Kosgoda turtle hatchery. Drive to Colombo for Galle Face Green and a last hopper, then the evening nonstop to Hyderabad. Add Sigiriya and Dambulla for a seven-night version.

Getting in. Since 25 May 2026 Indian passport holders receive a free 30-day double-entry tourist electronic travel authorisation, but it must still be applied for online on the official portal before departure and the free period has been announced as a pilot, so our desk files the ETA for each traveller and checks the rule against your travel dates before you book.

  • Plugs: types D and G at 230 V; Indian plugs usually fit the round Type D sockets, but carry an adapter for hotels with British-style sockets.
  • Cash and cards: cards work in hotels and city restaurants; carry rupees for tuk-tuks, temple entry, tea stalls and village lunches.
  • Etiquette: remove shoes and hats at temples, cover shoulders and knees, and never pose with your back to a Buddha statue; tattoos of the Buddha cause real trouble at immigration.
  • Vegetarian food: plentiful. Rice-and-curry spreads, dhal, hoppers and string hoppers are naturally vegetarian, and South Indian restaurants are common in Colombo and Kandy.
  • Transport: a car with driver is the usual way to tour the island; PickMe and Uber work in Colombo, and hill-country train seats must be reserved weeks ahead in season.

FAQ

Asked at the desk, answered here.

Do Indian citizens need a visa for Sri Lanka?

An online electronic travel authorisation is required but has been free for Indian tourists since 25 May 2026, giving 30 days with double entry. It must be applied for on the official portal before departure, and the free period was announced as a pilot, so our desk files the ETA for each traveller and checks the current rule against your dates before you book.

When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka from Hyderabad?

December to March for the south and west coasts and the hill country, which is the classic circuit. April to September suits the east coast around Trincomalee and Arugam Bay while the south-west monsoon is on. Kandy and the tea hills are pleasant in most months, and the two-hour flight makes a short trip practical in any season.

How many days do I need for Sri Lanka?

Five to six nights covers Kandy, the tea-country train, Yala and the south coast at a comfortable pace with a car and driver. Three nights works for a Colombo and Bentota beach break. With seven or eight nights you can add Sigiriya's rock fortress and the Dambulla cave temples in the north.

Is this route better for a family or a honeymoon?

Families love the Pinnawala elephants, the hill train, the Yala safari and the turtle hatchery, with the drive times kept short. Couples favour a tea-estate bungalow near Ella, a boutique hotel inside Galle Fort and a quieter beach at Mirissa or Tangalle. Tell the desk who is travelling and we shape the days accordingly.
