Schengen visa appointments in Hyderabad: how VFS slots work and how far ahead to book

The Schengen decision itself takes about two weeks. Getting the appointment is what takes months. Here is how the Hyderabad centres work and how our desk plans around them.

Every spring the same call comes in: a family with flights to Switzerland in June, hotels paid, and no appointment. The consulate would probably decide the file in a fortnight. The problem is the slot. This guide explains which Hyderabad centre handles each country, how appointments are released, how far ahead to start, and the rules that decide whether a file is accepted at the counter.

Which centre handles which country

  • VFS Global Joint Schengen Centre, Hyderabad (Punjagutta Metro Station): Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden and Switzerland. Since 2025 it sits at the Lower Concourse of Punjagutta Metro Station, the same building as the UK centre; it has moved more than once since 2019, so trust the address on your appointment confirmation, not an old search result.
  • BLS International, Kavuri Hills, Madhapur: Spain. Submissions in the morning on weekdays.
  • France also lodges at the Punjagutta VFS centre; it does not use TLScontact in India. The form is completed on the France-Visas website first, and the Bengaluru consulate decides. See the France page.
  • Hours at VFS are weekday mornings to mid-afternoon. Arrive fifteen minutes early with the printed appointment letter.

The main-destination rule decides where you apply

You apply to the country where you will spend the most nights. If nights are equal, the country you enter first. Picking a consulate with easier slots and then flying somewhere else is treated as misrepresentation and is the single most common reason a well-prepared Hyderabad file is refused. Our desk fixes the night count before a form is filled.

When slots appear

  • There is no published release schedule. Batches tend to appear around midnight or between six and nine in the morning, plus random cancellations through the day.
  • Peak demand runs May to August, with a second spike around Christmas. Delhi and Mumbai fill within minutes; Hyderabad's quota is separate and usually fills a little later, so Telangana and Andhra applicants should watch their own centre first.
  • For a June trip, start looking in February or March. By April or May the summer dates are gone.
  • Appointments at VFS are free. Anyone selling a guaranteed slot is selling something that does not exist, and a booking made with a bot or a shared login can be cancelled.

The timing rules in the Visa Code

  • You can lodge no earlier than six months before travel and no later than fifteen calendar days before.
  • The consulate decides within fifteen calendar days of receiving the file. That can be extended to forty-five days when more scrutiny is needed, which happens more in summer.
  • Fingerprints taken at a previous Schengen application are reused for fifty-nine months. The consulate may still ask to capture them again, so come prepared.
  • The visa fee rose on 11 June 2026; the current amount is quoted at the centre.

What is checked at the counter

The VFS officer does not decide the visa, but a file with a missing document is refused at the counter and the appointment is lost. The list is the one on our Schengen visa page: the harmonised application form, a passport valid three months beyond return with two blank pages, photos to the Schengen specification, flight reservation, hotel bookings for every night, travel medical insurance of at least €30,000 valid across the Schengen area for the whole trip, three to six months of bank statements, employment or business proof, and a cover letter that matches the itinerary day by day.

The two-year and five-year visa cascade

Since April 2024 the EU has applied a cascade for Indians resident in India. If you have obtained and lawfully used two Schengen visas within the previous three years, you can be issued a two-year multiple-entry visa. After using that one lawfully, a five-year visa normally follows, provided the passport is valid long enough. It is not an entitlement: unused visas earn no credit, and each consulate decides. The multi-year visa also carries a declaration that you will hold compliant insurance for every later trip.

No slots? The real options

  • Another Indian centre. Some countries, Germany among them, let you apply at any VFS centre in India regardless of where you live. Confirm per country before travelling to Bengaluru or Chennai for a slot.
  • Restructure the trip. Shifting two nights can change the main destination to a country with open dates, legitimately.
  • Premium lounge. An optional paid submission service at VFS. It buys comfort and sometimes a nearer date; it has no effect on the decision.
  • Cancellation watch. Check the portal yourself at the times above. A few minutes a day for a week usually finds something.

What the Entry/Exit System changes

The EU's biometric Entry/Exit System went live in October 2025 and has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. Your face and fingerprints are recorded at the border instead of a passport stamp, and your days in the Schengen area are counted electronically against the ninety-in-180 rule. Expect slower queues at the first European airport in summer, and keep your own count of days; a stamp count no longer proves anything.

Note. Our desk books the VFS or BLS appointment for you, prepares the file to the country's own checklist, and runs a document check the day before so nothing is refused at the counter. If a slot is genuinely not available for your dates, we tell you so before you buy a non-refundable ticket.

Questions we hear at the desk

How early should I book a Schengen appointment in Hyderabad for a summer trip?

Start looking in February or March for travel in June or July. Summer slots at the Hyderabad VFS centre are usually gone by April or May. You can lodge up to six months before travel and no later than fifteen days before, and the decision itself takes about fifteen calendar days once the file is in.

How long does a Schengen visa take after the VFS appointment?

The legal standard is fifteen calendar days from the day the consulate receives the file, extendable to forty-five days when further checks are needed, which is more common in peak season. Many Hyderabad tourist files come back in about a week outside summer.

Who qualifies for the two-year or five-year Schengen visa?

Indians resident in India who have obtained and lawfully used two Schengen visas within the previous three years may be issued a two-year multiple-entry visa; a five-year visa normally follows after that one is used lawfully. It is at the consulate's discretion, unused visas do not count, and the passport must be valid for the period.

Do I have to give fingerprints again for a Schengen visa?

Not if they were captured within the last fifty-nine months; the consulate can reuse them. It may still ask for a fresh capture, so attend the appointment ready for it. Children under twelve are exempt.

What does the EU Entry/Exit System mean for Indian travellers?

From 10 April 2026 your face and fingerprints are recorded at the Schengen border instead of a passport stamp, and your days are counted electronically against the ninety-in-180 rule. Allow extra time at the first European airport in summer and keep your own record of entry and exit dates.
