Italy's refusal rate for Indians is below the Schengen average, but its checklist is the most exacting of the three big destinations and its appointment calendar was the tightest in India through 2026. Here is how an Italy file is lodged from Hyderabad and what the consulate reads most closely.

Not Mumbai any more: Hyderabad files go to Bengaluru.
Since 2023 the Consulate General of Italy in Bengaluru has held jurisdiction over Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Older guides still send Hyderabad files to Mumbai; they are out of date. You lodge at the VFS Global centre at Punjagutta Metro Station and the file is couriered to Bengaluru.
WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT ITALY
A consulate that reads the bank stamp, the dates and the phone number on the form.
The Bengaluru checklist is specific in ways other consulates are not: the form is signed twice, both parents sign for a minor, the applicant's own phone number and email go on the form rather than an agency's, every page of the bank statement carries the branch stamp, and travel insurance must cover at least ten days from the travel date even for a shorter trip.
Italy also reserves the right to call applicants for an interview in Bengaluru and to ask for more documents, which extends the decision time. The checklist says plainly that nobody has a legal right to a visa. Our job is to make sure the file never gives the consulate a reason to use either power.

What this consulate asks for, beyond the standard Schengen file.
The nine standard documents are on our Schengen visa page. These are the items Italy adds or reads more strictly.
Italy publishes its tourism checklist for the Bengaluru jurisdiction, and the VFS officer at Punjagutta matches your file against it line by line. Most Italy files that come back refused or returned at the counter failed a formality on that list rather than a judgement about the traveller.
Our desk builds the file in the consulate's order, gets the statements stamped, checks the address on your passport against the residence rule and books the appointment early, because Italy's calendar has been the hardest in India to get into since the system outage of February 2026.
ITALY ASKS FOR
- The Schengen application form signed twice, in field 37 and on the last page, with the applicant's own mobile number and email, never an agency's
- Two photos to the Schengen specification, and both parents' signatures for a minor
- A cover letter naming every traveller, the dates, the day-by-day itinerary, who pays and the purpose; proprietors write it on company letterhead
- A leave-sanction letter on letterhead with the dates and a named signatory
- Confirmed hotel or B&B bookings for the whole trip, including nights in other Schengen countries
- Bank statements for the last three months, original, with the bank's stamp on every page; e-statements are refused. Income-tax acknowledgements for the last three years or Form 16A, three months of salary slips and an appointment letter or work ID
- Travel insurance of at least €30,000 with a repatriation clause, covering at least ten days from the travel date
- Photocopies of every Schengen visa issued in the last ten years
- Visiting an Italian resident: a signed invitation letter plus the host's Italian identity card, or passport and residence permit for foreign residents
- Passport not issued in the five jurisdiction states: six months of local address proof such as Aadhaar, a rent agreement, a utility bill or a bank statement
- A minor travelling with one parent or a third party: an affidavit notarised and legalised by the State Home Department, or a declaration signed at an Italian consulate
HOW IT WORKS
Three stages between you and the sticker.
The same three stages as any Schengen file, with the appointment booked earlier than for any other country.
Checklist and residence check
We check the address on your passport against the Bengaluru jurisdiction, list the extra proof if it was issued elsewhere, and build the file to the consulate's published order with the statements stamped at the branch.
Appointment at Punjagutta
We book the VFS slot eight to ten weeks ahead and watch for released cancellations, which appear late at night and early in the morning. At the centre you give fingerprints and a photo unless yours are under 59 months old.
Decision in Bengaluru, passport back
The file is couriered to Bengaluru. The consulate normally decides within 15 calendar days, extendable to 45, and may call you for an interview. We track the file and tell you when the passport is back at Punjagutta.
RULES WORTH KNOWING
What Italy does differently.
- Appointments: Italy had India-wide slot shortages through 2026 after its visa system went down for a week in February, pushing appointments forward and feeding a summer backlog. Hyderabad has had somewhat better availability than Bengaluru, but summer slots were reported gone by May.
- The residence rule: you apply under the consulate covering where you have lived for the last six months. Hyderabad files only go to Bengaluru; a passport issued outside the five states needs six months of local address proof.
- Insurance: the policy must run at least ten days from the travel date even for a five-day trip, with repatriation cover and the €30,000 minimum.
- Interviews: the consulate reserves the right to call a personal interview and ask for further documents, which also extends the decision time.
- Refusals: Italy's non-issuance rate for Indians in 2025 was below the India-wide Schengen average, which is encouraging for a complete file. Multi-year visas follow the EU cascade for Indians.
WHY ITALY FILES COME BACK REFUSED
- Bank statements without a stamp on every page, or e-statements
- A large deposit shortly before the application with no explanation
- Hotel bookings that cannot be verified or were cancelled after the appointment
- An itinerary that does not match the bookings, or an agency's contact details on the form
- Addresses that disagree across the passport, bills and statements without six months of residence proof
- Information the consulate judges inconsistent or documents it judges unreliable

Does my Italy visa application from Hyderabad go to Mumbai?
No. Since 2023 Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have come under the Consulate General of Italy in Bengaluru, together with Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. You lodge at the VFS centre at Punjagutta Metro Station in Hyderabad and the file is couriered to Bengaluru, which decides it.
How many months of bank statements does Italy ask for?
The Bengaluru consulate asks for the last three months, original and stamped by the bank on every page, along with income-tax acknowledgements for the last three years or Form 16A and three months of salary slips. The Delhi consulate asks for six months, but that is a different jurisdiction. E-statements are refused.
I am staying with my brother in Milan. What does he send?
A signed invitation letter with his address, your dates and the relationship, plus a copy of his Italian identity card, or his passport and residence permit if he is a foreign resident. You still show your own funds; a formal guarantee is not on the standard checklist and is asked for only case by case.
Why can't I find an Italy appointment in Hyderabad?
Italy had slot shortages across India through 2026 after its visa system outage in February, and summer appointments were reported gone by May. Book eight to ten weeks before travel, check the calendar late at night and early in the morning for released cancellations, and tell the desk your dates early so we can watch for you.
Can the Italian consulate call me for an interview?
Yes. The Bengaluru checklist reserves the right to a personal interview and to request further documents, and the consulate does use it. An interview extends the decision time beyond the fifteen-day standard, which is one more reason to apply early and to lodge a file that answers every question before it is asked.
